Isn't it funny how programmed we become to what a classroom "should" look like -- even from such a young age?
- Starting off the year strong with parent communication. My goal is to send an email every week or two. Also I had them write a 1 million word or less essay about their children. I learned SO MUCH about what makes some kids tick as well as set the course for a positive home-school relationship.
- Having students fill out a get to know you paper. I used to do it, but I have neglected it over the past few years. Students let you know things privately that they would NEVER admit out loud, such as "Spanish is my favorite class. No lie!"
- Helping to make my colleagues' lives easier. Sending out a weekly email with the schedule, duties, meetings and other special events helps to keep everyone "in the know".
- Letting my colleagues know how much I value and appreciate them - as human beings and as professionals. A nice comment, forwarding an inspirational article and even chocolate can go a long way.
