In previous years, this was done as a whole class using paper and 2 hula hoops to make a 3-dimensional Venn Diagram.
The activity offers A LOT of great things: Reading comprehension, higher level thinking, sorting, giving opinions and voting, opportunities for repetition of the sentences, comparing students' opinions.
In the age of Co-Vid, my challenge was how to keep the kinesthetic aspect of the activity.
Copy of activity - Each student makes their own copy of the Google Slideshow. I do this, I changed the URL ending to "copy". This allows each student to manipulate their own sentences and put them in the appropriate column.
UPDATE #1: There is an extension called Sir Links-a-Lot. This will change the URL of Google Docs, Spreadsheets, and Slides based on your need. Total game changer!
UPDATE #2: To quickly and easily share materials provide the URL in the chat on Zoom and give a QR Code for Face to Face students. There are many extensions that can be installed in the Browser. The one I use is a QR creator and URL shortener in one. In one click, I have a QR Code.

In a revamped sports unit, we wanted students to interview each other about what they like to do. In the past the task has been too loose, and the students got off task very quickly. I decided to use a glyph as a data collection tool. They take a quiz about their own preferences and use the symbols to "personalize" (decorate) a t-shirt or a sneaker. This is super motivating to kids!
The second part of the task involves a group of 2-3 students (Zoom Breakout rooms work well for this) to analyze what is the same, and what is different between each others' responses. There is a graphic to help each student to organize the information gathered in the interview.

Why Google Slides?
Why Nearpod?
** I converted this into Nearpod but kept it in Slides here. The links stop working in Nearpod after a set amount of time. |
** This activity was done as a pre-reading/ vocabulary practice activity for the Movie Talk "El Regalo".
Why & How did I structure this?
- In years' past, students didn't understand grammar terminology.
- Changed the questions to provide ENDINGS and meanings.
- Cut down the number of items.
- This year, I was originally going to generate a list of possibilities for several of the items as a class and then let them do the rest independently.
- Noticed some struggling: What to put in the blanks and if the end result should make sense.
- Generated a list of ideas for most of the spaces as a class. They filled in as we went.
- Shared the comic template and provided time to complete it.
- Provided a place on Canvas to upload the 2 documents.
- Virtual Show and Tell - Divided students into groups of 2-3 and created Breakout Rooms for the Zoomies. The Roomies paired off.
- Read their story and show the pictures. Had to point/ highlight the image that went along with it. Zoomies could screen share with people in their Breakout rooms and could annotate/ highlight their images.
- I wasn't originally intending to do a Show & Tell, but I noticed that they were showing their stories/ pictures to each other.
- Show & Tell: Enjoyable, social, get more repetitions of the target vocabulary and structures.
- Verdict: They really enjoyed it. It was different enough and interesting enough. Glad I structured it like this.
